But I Don’t Feel Like Going To A Meeting
The words kept bouncing around in my head. I’m simply too comfortable right here in my front room watching the Red Sox-Yankee game. I don’t need to go to a meeting. Besides, the fog is rolling in and it is too cold outside. I’ll hit up a meeting tomorrow. Better yet, inbetween innings I’ll dash outside and meditate for a few minutes. That oughta do the trick.
Sound familiar? Yet no matter how hard I tried to convince myself that I did not need to go to a meeting, something inside me kept persisting. Go to a meeting. You need it. It’s the right thing to do.
So there I was, mediating an internal debate when all I wanted to do was enjoy a simple baseball game. Where on earth do these thoughts come from and what is the purpose?
As I was contemplating the issue, another thought came to mind. It was something I had heard at a meeting years ago. It was advice from the speaker suggesting that the time when you least want to go to a meeting is typically the best time to go to a meeting. After some additional deliberation on the issue, I decided to head out the door and search for a meeting. And, quite frankly, it was my best decision of the day.
Though I did not realize it at the time, I had been suffering from a wild case of co-dependency. I did not think it was anything significant, but now that I think of it, I’m sure my co-dependency plight was the subconscious proponent of going to the meeting in the first place. And wouldn’t you know, guess what was primarily discussed at the meeting? You guessed it. Enabling/Co-Dependency. The meeting was exactly what I needed to tease out what had been bothering me and bring it to the surface where I’m now dealing with it head on.
I’m still trying to digest the lessons to be learned from this experience, as well as how to handle my raging co-dependency. One thing is for sure. Whenever I don’t feel like going to a meeting is a sure sign that I’ll be going to one.
By the way, I got home from the meeting in time to watch Alex Rodriguez plant one in the right center field bleachers in the top of the ninth for the go ahead and winning run.
